This afternoon we’re going live to continue our Human Portraiture theme in the Academy, starting The Gentleman Portrait. This month we’re working through three portraits: The Cowgirl, The Gentleman, and Human Skin, all focused on studying the structure, tone, and expression of the human face. The portrait you see here is Human Skin, another piece from this theme (in progress) If you’d like to access the Academy and see what’s included this month, you can type Academy in the comments section. 🥰

I had the pleasure of painting these two golden retrievers for a client in the USA back in 2022. It was a fascinating commission… what I love most about golden retrievers is how much variety there is in their coats. Even within the same breed, you’ll find everything from pale cream to deep russet gold, and these two were a perfect example. One had a lighter, almost honey-coloured coat, while the other was a richer, deeper gold. Capturing this on paper presents a real challenge. Their fur isn’t j

This is a little glimpse from one of last month’s Academy courses ❤️ It was quite the challenge to find quiet moments to stitch together… I’m talking through about 95% of the course 🤣 The livestreams were full of great moments, and we focused on golden fur. In Spanish we painted a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, and in English a Golden Retriever. I can’t wait to share what’s coming in September (the new theme is black and white fur! 🐾) As always, if you’d like to join the weekly livestream

Painting a “blue” cat’s eye is always a reminder that blue is never just blue! 😇 You end up with so many greens and unexpected undertones in there. Same for the fur – what looks grey often has so much warmth and coolness. This time-lapse captures some of that process (and it’s part of one of my online courses inside the Academy 🙊) This particular approach is something we talk a lot about in the Real Art Academy. I drop new English and Spanish lessons every week, and it’s been awesome to see ou

This is the progress of Ellie & Boo’s portrait, which I finished a few months ago but never had the chance to share. ❤️ Their lovely family asked me to place them in their backyard—clearly, they live in paradise. ❤️ #art #asmr #petportrait | Patricia Otero - Portraits & Fine Art

Paint with me. 🐈‍⬛🌙 Instagram has removed the full audio of many of my past videos, so I’m reuploading them 😉 This is Kitzalle. Pastels on pastelmat board. My clients words: “Kitzalle was my sister’s cat. Unfortunately she passed away last year at the age of 15. Her name was April (she was born on 1st of April), and her nickname was “Kitzalle” (and also “Principessa”. She had a unique personality, wasn’t so friendly to other cats in my sister house or outside across the years, and kept her be

Throwback to this very special commission I completed for a client in the USA. 35x50cm, pastels on Pastelmat. Rosie wasn’t just a pet. She was family. Born on Thanksgiving Day in 2013, she became her owner’s shadow through years of law school and life’s challenges. She was sweet, sassy, headstrong, and endlessly comforting. One of those souls who truly didn’t know she was a dog. Her human wrote to me with so much love and detail, and I felt incredibly honored to create this portrait. Here are th

This portrait of Missy holds a very special place in my memory. The client wanted it to have a warm, timeless feel, with a background of rich browns touched with ochre undertones. She asked for Missy to be lying on her favourite chair, with her toy beside her, and it was important to her that the composition reflected exactly what she had imagined for her little girl. I began by sketching and presenting several compositions, as we wanted to capture her vision perfectly. Missy meant the world to
